The story of Gustave would not be known today if it wasn't for dedicated researchers from 1937 on who have been tracking down evidence to substantiate the Whitehead first flight claim. In particular, journalist Stella Randolph who wrote The Lost Flights of Gustave Whitehead and Before the Wrights flew: The story of Gustave Whitehead and Bill O'Dwyer who with Randolph wrote History by Contract have been instrumental in the Whitehead cause and were significant in the establishment of the Gustav Weisskopf Museum in Leutershausen, Germany in 1974. Another major contributor to this effort was Andy Kosch who with others built a replica of airplane Number 21 and flew it in several tests through 1986 and 87 in order to prove the technology available to Whitehead worked. These tests were replicated by the Historical Flight Research Committee Gustave Whitehead in 1996 and '97.
The Committee works closely with the Whitehead museum which today hosts an impressive collection of photographs, documents and other materials belonging to Whitehead and is open year-round to aviation enthusiasts who wish to make the trip to this beautiful part of the German countryside. It is well-worth taking a look at the video available through the museum of this historic flight if you are interested in the details of the Committee's work.
